Eating for Health
In 1992 my brother visited for a week, stating that he would do all the shopping and cooking. He had become a vegetarian. He fixed veggie burritos, veggie stir-fry, sandwiches, soups, and such. He also gave me John Robbins "Diet for a New America" book and video. From that week it was easy to drop meat, except occasional fish, for the past 15 years. But from a heath perspective, dairy might be even more harmful, and I've found it hard to give up, e.g., pizza and Mexican food.In 1999 my vegetarian friend and co-worker Mark Blackburn introduced me to "Raw/Living Food Diet." My initial reaction was skeptical. Why should cooking make a difference? But he explained about how heat above 112F kills enzymes. An apple still contains living cells until it is heated, for example. He cited that white blood count rises after eating cooked foods but not after eating raw foods: Cooked food is toxic, but we have developed an immune response to it - similar to people in Mexico drinking polluted water with no apparent effect.
Going 100% raw is not realistic for most people. Still I've made changes: I start each day with a smoothie, something like:
- raw almonds / flax seeds
- orange / grapefruit / apple / banana / pinapple
- frozen blueberries and strawberries
- raw cacao powder & green powder
Recently I stumbled on David Wolfe [profile article]videos on YouTube (in playlist link below), which inspired me to expand on the raw foods that I eat. (David has a law degree, but rather than using it to be dishonest, he is getting rich off his books, lectures, and travel tours - e.g., video in Peru.)
In this article Wolfe cites the many reasons to be a raw food vegetarian.
About three years ago we attended a presentation by the Boutenko Family, that had all reversed significant health issues when they switched to raw food. In this YouTube video (part2) Victoria explains how after several years she discovered the importance of greens (chlorophyl).
June update: We purchased an Excalibur Dehydrator. I was able to pick it up since they are manufactured here in Sacramento. Click on the image to see a large photo of our first batch of plums, kiwi, strawberry, apple, mango, and yam.

You may want to view Luci Lock’s videos. Her first video (not sure if they can be sorted by date, or not) introduces herself.
She says she was very sick at one time and then Dr. Mercola advised her to Switch to an all raw foods diet. Her condition improved rapidly.
Cooking food destroys Probiotics (bacteria) and Digestive Enzymes that are useful to your gut (intestines) and liver to extract nutrients from food.

Dr. Mercola is a naturopath or homeopath near my home.
I started reading a lot to understand the root causes of Ovarian Cancer…
My mother has been fighting it since 2003.
There is a great deal of controversy about Statin (cholesterol) drugs and Dairy Milk causing cancer.
I finally convinced my mother to stop taking Zocor… she’s been taking it since early 1990s.
Anti-oxidants also play a key role in eliminating cancer.
A new version of CoEnzyme Q10 just became available and is 4 to 8 time more absorptive…
It is called “Ubiquinol”… best supplier (my opinion) for dietary supplements like this is
Swanson Vitamins http://www.swansonvitamins.com … they’ve got (almost) everything including high quality and low prices.
The Milk Thistle (herb) is also a strong anti-oxidant being studied closely for its anticancer affects.
There is the standard extract and a formula called “Siliphos” and now something called “Isosilybin B”.
Milk Thistle is being studied closely to identify the active ingredient and how it works.
Of course some Chemotherapies are also stong anti-oxidants and other may have adverse reactions with certain dietary supplements... always discuss all treatments with your Oncologist. My mother's actually order her to NOT take CoQ10 nor Milk Thistle (while she is on Tamoxifen).
For decades, there had also been controversy about fat in one’s diet causing cancer. Finally, last year at the NCI, National Cancer Institute’s annual meeting, they said there does seem to be some link between fat and cancer.
This week in Chicago is ASCO, American Society of Clinical Oncology, annual meeting and
now they are saying that Flaxseed; a.k.a. “Omega 3” slows or stops the growth of tumors.
The press release is here: http://www.asco.org/ASCO/Communications/2007%20Releases/Annual%20Meeting%20Releases/FINAL%20CAM%20Release.pdf
Very useful information… since so many people get cancer.
I do think diet can plays a significant role in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
Awesome. Another software engineer finds raw food. Forget about the hyped stereotype of hackers surviving on pizza, soft drinks and caffeine. raw food is much superior for energy level and clarity of mind.
Raw food also makes people hate Indian programmers - lol
Oh, I forgot, the idea of raw food came from India.
How can I reach your page on Surewest. Saw the article in Bee. Am also a long time share holder.
