CHARLES M. WALLACE, M. D. In the broad, prolific and interesting filed of medical science there are numerous departments, each attached to the other in some form and coming under the same head of general medicine and surgery, yet each also apart in its requirements. It is because of this that many physicians are engaged in specialization along some favorite line in which they feel their talents and abilities can find their best and truest expression. An exception to this rule is found in Dr. Charles M. Wallace, of Winterset, who is experienced and learned in all branches of his calling, and is known as one of the leading general practitioners of Madison County.

Doctor Wallace was born at Bedford, Iowa, January 9, 1871, and is a son of Isaac H. and Mary L. (Jones) Wallace. Isaac H. Wallace was born in Tennessee, and as a young man came to Iowa and settled in Davis County. He was residing in Taylor County at the outbreak of the war between the states. He enlisted in Company H. Fifteenth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and was in a number of engagements, including those incident to General Sherman's famous "March to the sea." He received his honorable discharge at Washington, D. C., at the close of the war and returned to Iowa, where he again engaged in agricultural pursuits. Subsequently he took up the manufacture of brick, and furnished the brick for many of the most important buildings now standing at Bedford. His death occurred at Macksburg, Madison County, in 1913.

Mr. Wallace was a man of high character who enjoyed the respect and confidence of his fellow-citizens, but never desired the honors of public office. He married Mary L. Jones, a native of Davis County, and she died at Macksburg, December 1, 1918. They became the parents of the following children: R. J., who is engaged in agricultural operations at Gravity, Iowa; Frank, a salesman, residing at Hardin, this state; L. D., also a salesman, whose home is at Mediapolis, Des Moines County, Iowa; Dr. Charles M., of this review; and four brothers and one sister who are deceased.

Charles M. Wallace attended a country school at Bedford, and after completing a high school course entered Ensworth College, Saint Joseph, Missouri, from which he was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine as a member of the class of 1908. He commenced the practice of his profession at Macksburg in August, 1908, and remained there until September 1, 1920, when he took up his permanent residence at Winterset, where he has since been in the enjoyment of an increasingly large practice in medicine and surgery. He has established a substantial reputation as an able practitioner and diagnostician and a capable operator, and ranks high in his profession. He belongs to the Madison County Medical Society, the Iowa State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He is a Consistory Mason and Shriner, and belongs to the Modern Woodmen of America, the Royal Neighbors and the Rebekahs. His religious faith is that of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has been a supporter of all worth while civic movements, but has never sought public office or political preferment.

On February 27, 1890, Doctor Wallace was united in marriage with Miss Mary H. Parson, of Newmarket, Iowa, who died February 16, 1913, and to this union there were born two children: Loa G., born at Newmarket, Iowa, January 3, 1891, now an agriculturist near Winterset, who married Hazel Troutman, of Macksburg, and has three sons, Chester M., Russell S. and Victor; and Eva M., born at Newmarket, June 5, 1896. who married Dr. M. L. Pindell, of Beverly Hills, California, and has one son, Joseph William.
