8. Frankfurt and Gelnhausen, Germany

Lynn was a "best friend of my first girlfriend" Diane, and we had attended her wedding to Jim in Pleasanton, California, about four years prior. He was in the army and they were living outside of Frankfurt, Germany. I had phoned prior to my trip to see what they thought of my "stopping by." It seemed ok so I gave an approximate day that I would be there. I used the Swiss train pass to travel to Basel, Switzerland, then bought a round trip ticket to Frankfurt for about $60, and jumped on a train. When I arrived about three hours later I phoned Lynn, and waited outside the station hoping we would see each other (no cell phones). She drove me the 20 miles to their apartment in Gelnhausen outside of the military base. Jim was busy working and her kids were sick. Lynn explained that their landlord was chewing them out for showering everyday. "You only need shower once a week!"

The next morning we drive to the base to say hi to Jim, then she dropped me back at Frankfurt station.
